Why So Many Kitchens Go Quartz

Quartz countertops are what most League City homeowners ask us about first. Quartz is engineered: crushed natural quartz is mixed with resin and pigment and pressed into slabs, so the color and pattern you pick from a sample is close to what arrives on your cabinets. It is non-porous, so it does not need sealing, and coffee, wine and cooking oil wipe off rather than soaking in.

Where quartz fits, and where it does not

Quartz suits busy kitchens, islands where kids do homework, and anyone who wants a white or marble-look counter without marble's upkeep. Its weak points are heat and sun. The resin can scorch or discolor under a pan straight off the burner, so trivets are part of living with quartz. And Caesarstone says standard indoor quartz fades and weakens under UV, so we do not recommend it for an uncovered patio or a counter that sits in direct afternoon sun through a west window without a shade. For outdoor kitchens we point you toward granite or an outdoor-rated surface instead.

Grades and what they mean for price

Quartz is sold in quality tiers. HomeGuide's cost guide lists installed prices of roughly $50 to $95 per square foot for second-choice material, $75 to $110 for commercial grade and $90 to $200 for first-choice slabs. Lower tiers can have more visible flecks of resin, small color variations or pits; first-choice slabs and designer veined patterns sit at the top. Angi puts the average quartz project around $4,500. A typical 30 to 40 square foot kitchen comes in at about $1,500 to $8,000 in HomeGuide's figures, with islands, waterfall ends and full-height backsplashes adding to it.

Thickness, edges and seams

Most kitchen quartz is 3 cm thick, about 1 1/4 inches, and sits directly on the cabinets. A standard eased or square edge is usually included; bevels, bullnose and ogee profiles cost more per linear foot. Quartz slabs are large, but an L-shaped kitchen or a long run usually needs at least one seam. We plan seams at the layout stage, away from the sink and cooktop where possible, and match the pattern direction across the joint. Heavily veined patterns are harder to match, so we show you where the seam will fall before cutting.

Quartz in newer Bay Area homes

Many homes in League City's newer subdivisions were built with entry-level granite or laminate and a small undermount sink. A quartz upgrade often means a larger single-bowl sink, a new faucet with fewer holes, and sometimes a waterfall end on the island. If you are changing the sink, choose it before we template so the cutout can be made to its exact template.

Caring for quartz

Wipe with warm water and mild dish soap. Avoid oven cleaner, bleach-based scrubs and abrasive pads, which can dull the surface. Use cutting boards and trivets. Manufacturer warranties on quartz are usually product warranties that cover defects in the slab and set their own care and installation conditions, so keep the paperwork for the color you choose.

Quartz Countertops Questions

How much do quartz countertops cost in League City?

National guides put installed quartz at about $50 to $200 per square foot depending on grade, with Angi's average project around $4,500. A 30 to 40 square foot kitchen typically runs $1,500 to $8,000 in HomeGuide's figures. We give a written price after measuring your kitchen.

Is quartz better than granite?

Neither is better across the board. Quartz is non-porous, needs no sealing and gives consistent color; granite handles heat better and every slab is unique. For indoor kitchens both work well; for outdoor kitchens, granite is the better fit.

Can you put a hot pan on quartz?

It is not a good idea. The resin in quartz can scorch or discolor from a pan straight off a burner or out of the oven. Use a trivet or hot pad every time.

Does quartz need to be sealed?

No. Quartz is non-porous, so it does not take a sealer. Daily cleaning with mild soap and water is enough; avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive pads.

Will a quartz countertop have seams?

Most L-shaped and U-shaped kitchens need at least one. We plan seam locations on the layout before cutting, keep them away from sinks and cooktops where possible, and match the pattern across the joint.
