Choosing and Installing Natural Granite

Granite countertops are cut from quarried blocks of natural stone, so every slab has its own mix of crystals, color and veining. That is the main reason people choose granite: the counter is one of a kind. Granite also tolerates heat better than engineered quartz, stands up to knives and daily wear, and, sealed properly, resists most stains.

Picking the slab, not just the color name

Two slabs sold under the same name can look very different, and even one slab changes from end to end. For anything beyond a small vanity, we recommend choosing the actual slabs at a stone supplier's yard and having them tagged for your job. When we lay out the cuts, we place the most interesting movement where it will be seen, such as the island top, and keep seams in quieter areas.

Levels and price

Granite is often sold by level. HomeGuide's cost guide lists installed granite at about $50 to $80 per square foot for level 1, $80 to $150 for level 2, and $150 to $250 for level 3 and exotic stones, with an average kitchen of 30 to 40 square feet coming in around $2,400 to $6,000. Angi's 2026 data puts the typical granite project at $2,000 to $4,000, with an average of about $3,250. Darker or rarer stones, honed or leathered finishes and upgraded edges move the price up.

Sealing and Gulf Coast living

Granite is porous to a degree that varies by stone. Some dense, dark granites barely absorb water; lighter, more open stones can darken from oil or water if left unsealed. We test and seal as part of installation, and we show you the simple water test to tell when it is time to reseal. In a humid climate the stone itself is not bothered by moisture, but standing water around an undermount sink and failed caulk are worth watching.

Granite outdoors

Granite is one of the few natural materials that handles full sun well, which makes it a common choice for League City patios and outdoor kitchens. Polished dark granite can get hot to the touch in July sun, and a honed or leathered finish shows less glare. Near Clear Lake and Galveston Bay, rinsing salt film off now and then keeps the surface looking clean and the sealer working.

Replacing older granite

Some Bay Area homes built in the early 2000s have granite with dated colors, thin 2 cm slabs with a built-up edge, or tile backsplashes that look tired. Replacing granite means removing the old tops without damaging cabinets, checking the cabinets for level, and templating fresh. If the old granite comes off cleanly, it is hauled away as part of the job when the quote includes removal.

Granite Countertops Questions

How much does granite cost per square foot installed?

HomeGuide's figures average $80 to $150 per square foot installed, from about $50 for level 1 stone to $250 or more for exotic slabs. An average 30 to 40 square foot kitchen runs about $2,400 to $6,000. Your written quote is based on the slab you choose.

How much does 20 feet of granite countertop cost?

Twenty linear feet at a standard 25-inch depth is about 42 square feet, or roughly $3,300 to $6,300 at the $80 to $150 average range. Edges, extra cutouts and a backsplash are added on top.

How often does granite need to be sealed?

It depends on the stone. Dense, dark granites may go years between sealings, while lighter, more porous stones may need it every year or so. If water darkens the stone within a few minutes, it is time to reseal.

Is granite good for an outdoor kitchen in League City?

Yes. Granite tolerates direct sun and rain far better than indoor quartz. Dark polished granite can get hot in summer sun, so a lighter color or honed finish is worth considering for uncovered counters.
