Kitchen countertop replacement is the most direct way to change how a kitchen looks and works without replacing the cabinets. The old laminate, tile or granite comes off, the cabinets are checked and leveled, and new quartz or stone goes on, cut to fit your kitchen exactly. For most homes, the kitchen is out of use for a short window around install day rather than for weeks.

Is your kitchen a good candidate?

Replacement works best when the cabinet boxes are solid, square and dry. Before we template, we look for soft or swollen cabinet bottoms under the sink, sagging runs, loose face frames and gaps along the wall. On install day we disconnect the plumbing, set the new tops, mount the sink, and reconnect the faucet and drain. A slide-in range or a gas cooktop is reset once the tops are in.

Fixr's 2026 guide puts most kitchen countertop installations at $1,400 to $5,250, with about $3,000 typical for 35 square feet. By material, Fixr lists installed quartz at $50 to $200 or more per square foot, granite at $40 to $150, quartzite at $60 to $200 and laminate at $15 to $60. Timing the job

The visible work is short: tear-out and install usually happen on the same day for a standard kitchen. The wait is between templating and install while the slab is cut. During that gap the old counters stay in place and the kitchen works normally. Plan for the sink to be out of service for part of install day, and for caulk at the backsplash to cure before heavy use.
