Houston Kitchens Come in Every Age and Shape

Countertops in Houston, TX have to fit a housing stock that ranges from Inner Loop streetcar-era homes to townhouses built last year. Houston has never adopted formal zoning, so a pre-World War II house can sit a block from a three-story townhome, and each kitchen we measure tends to be its own puzzle. We template, fabricate and install quartz, granite, quartzite, marble and outdoor counters, and we quote every job in writing before anything is cut.

Why quartz is our most requested surface here

Quartz is engineered stone, so it is non-porous and does not need sealing. In a city where summer mornings average over 90% relative humidity, that matters: a surface that does not absorb moisture or spills is easier to keep clean in a kitchen that is rarely truly dry. Quartz also comes in consistent slabs, which helps when a long galley run or a waterfall island needs seams that match.

Good fits for quartz in Houston homes:

  • Townhouse kitchens with tight islands and waterfall ends
  • Rental units where owners want a surface tenants cannot stain easily
  • Kitchens rebuilt after flood damage, where cabinets are new and level

Kitchens rebuilt after water

Many Houston homeowners have replaced a kitchen because of flooding, not taste. Tropical Storm Allison in June 2001 dropped up to 40 inches of rain on parts of the city, and Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 brought more than 50 inches to some areas and damaged hundreds of thousands of homes. If your cabinets were replaced after a flood, the new boxes are often a different height or depth than the old ones. We measure from the cabinets that are actually installed, not from an old drawing, and we check level across every run before templating so the stone sits flat.

Raised homes and new floodplain rules

In 2018 City Council voted 9 to 7 to require new homes in the floodplain to be built two feet above the 500-year floodplain. Raised and rebuilt homes often come with brand-new kitchen layouts, and that is a good moment to pick stone: there is no old top to tear off and no backsplash tile to cut around. If you are rebuilding, we can template as soon as base cabinets are set and secured.

Owners, landlords and investors

About 42.1% of Houston homes are owner-occupied according to Census estimates, which means a large share of the kitchens in the city belong to landlords. For rental turnovers we can quote level-one granite or a plain quartz with a simple eased edge, which holds up to tenant use and keeps the cost per unit predictable. For owner-occupied homes, we spend more time on edge profiles, sink style and backsplash height.

Our full range in the city

  • Quartz countertops for kitchens, islands and laundry rooms
  • Granite countertops, from budget level-one slabs to exotic patterns
  • Kitchen countertop replacement, including tear-out and haul-away of laminate, tile or old stone
  • Bathroom vanity tops with undermount sinks and faucet drilling
  • Quartzite and marble for homeowners who want natural stone
  • Outdoor kitchen countertops for covered patios and grill islands

Before you call

It helps to know whether you want to keep your current sink, whether the cooktop is staying, and whether you plan new backsplash tile. Send a few photos and rough dimensions to (346) 521-5586 and we can give you a ballpark range. Typical installed prices depend on material, edge, cutouts and how many seams the layout needs, so the final number comes after we measure.

Houston Facts That Affect Your Countertop Project

  • No formal zoning. Houston is the largest U.S. city without formal zoning regulations. Land use is shaped by deed restrictions, covenants and rules like minimum lot sizes, which dropped from 5,000 to 3,500 square feet in 1998 and helped spur townhouse construction.
  • Heavy humidity. Houston has a humid subtropical climate. Summer mornings average over 90% relative humidity, temperatures reach 90 degrees F or higher about 106.5 days a year, and average annual rainfall is about 49.8 inches.
  • A long flood record. Tropical Storm Allison (2001) dropped up to 40 inches of rain on parts of the city, and Hurricane Harvey (2017) brought over 50 inches to some areas and damaged hundreds of thousands of homes. In 2018 the city began requiring new floodplain homes to sit two feet above the 500-year floodplain.
  • Mostly renters. About 42.1% of Houston housing units are owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied home value is $277,800, and 82.9% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024).

Houston Questions

Do I need a city permit to replace countertops in Houston?

Swapping a countertop by itself is usually treated differently from moving plumbing or wiring, but the City of Houston decides what needs a permit. The Houston Permitting Center has a Project Planner tool that lists the permits for a renovation. If your project includes moving a sink or adding circuits, check there first or ask us and we will tell you what we know.

My kitchen flooded during Harvey and the cabinets were replaced. Will new stone fit?

Yes, as long as the new cabinets are installed, level and secured. We template from what is actually in place, so changes in cabinet height or depth after a flood rebuild are not a problem. If anything is out of level, we point it out before we cut.

What countertop do you suggest for a Houston rental property?

For rentals, most owners choose a level-one granite or an entry-priced quartz with an eased edge. Both resist heat and scratches well, and quartz does not need resealing between tenants. We can quote several units at once if you manage more than one property.

Do deed restrictions in my Houston neighborhood affect countertop work?

Interior countertop work is rarely covered by deed restrictions, but some civic associations set rules about contractor parking, dumpsters and work hours. Tell us about any restrictions when you book and we will plan the install day around them.
