The Second Kitchen After the Storm

A lot of the demand for countertops in Shoreacres traces back to one week in September 2008. Hurricane Ike made landfall near Galveston on September 13, and Wikipedia reports that 88% of Shoreacres homes suffered flood damage. A 2012 AP report described the town as Ike's worst victim in Harris County and said most homeowners had flood insurance and rebuilt on their own. Those rebuilt kitchens are now around eighteen years old. Many still have sound cabinets under tops that were chosen quickly and on a budget, and that is the kind of job we do most: new quartz or granite on existing cabinets.

Shoreacres is now part of La Porte

Residents of Shoreacres and La Porte voted on May 2, 2026 to consolidate, and the change took effect on May 11, 2026, when Shoreacres dissolved as a separate city. For any permit question tied to your project, such as moving a sink or adding a circuit, check with the City of La Porte, which now covers the neighborhood.

Rebuilt in a hurry, refinished with care

Kitchens put together in the months after a flood were often done fast, sometimes by several different crews. When we come out for an estimate, we look for:

  • Cabinets that shifted or swelled and are no longer level
  • Seams in old granite that have opened or been filled more than once
  • Laminate edges lifting near the sink
  • Backsplash tile that was set directly on the old top and will need to come off

None of these rule out new countertops, but they change the plan, and we would rather tell you before fabrication than after.

Choosing for a long life

Quartz is the main pick for Shoreacres kitchens: it is non-porous, needs no sealing and stays consistent in color. Granite works for owners who want natural stone and plan an outdoor kitchen to match. Quartzite and marble suit a primary bath or island. Bathroom vanity tops are an easy add-on and can often come from the same slab.

Big lots and outdoor cooking

The 2012 report listed damage to about 80% of the town's pine trees and described homes on lots as large as half an acre. Many yards here have room for a covered patio with a grill station. Near the water, outdoor counters face humidity and salt air, so we use sealed granite outside and keep quartz indoors, out of direct sun.

Pricing guidance

We price it after measuring, and removal of old tops and backsplash is quoted as its own line. For national cost ranges by material, see our service pages. Call (346) 521-5586 for a free estimate and a written quote.

Shoreacres Questions

Who handles permits in Shoreacres now?

Shoreacres consolidated with La Porte effective May 11, 2026, so permit questions for countertop work that includes plumbing or electrical changes should go to the City of La Porte.

My kitchen was rebuilt after Ike. Can new tops go on the same cabinets?

Usually, if the cabinets are level and the boxes are dry and solid. Post-flood rebuilds sometimes used cabinets that have since sagged, so we check every run during the estimate before recommending a top-only replacement.

What happens to my backsplash when the old countertop comes out?

If the tile sits on the old top, some of it usually breaks during removal. Many owners use the project to switch to a new tile or a slab backsplash. We will tell you what to expect before demolition.

Is it worth putting expensive stone in a home that could flood again?

Stone tops themselves tolerate water far better than particleboard cabinets do. The bigger risk in a flood is the cabinets underneath. Many owners choose a mid-range quartz for value and spend more on cabinet materials that resist moisture.
