Built for Santa Fe Family Kitchens

Countertops in Santa Fe tend to get a lot of use. More than 81% of homes in the city are lived in by their owners, households average 2.75 people, and nearly 88% of residents were in the same home a year earlier. People settle here, and they cook. When they replace a countertop, they want something that will last as long as they plan to stay, which is why quartz and granite are the two materials we quote most in Santa Fe.

A city that chose itself

Santa Fe took its name from the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, which ran through western Galveston County in 1877. Small towns named Alta Loma, Arcadia and Algoa grew up along the tracks. In the mid-1970s, when Hitchcock tried to annex part of Alta Loma, residents petitioned to form their own city, and voters approved incorporation on January 21, 1978. Santa Fe later took in all of Arcadia and parts of Algoa. That history explains why the city covers about 17 square miles and why homes range from older places on larger lots to newer subdivisions.

Harvey and the kitchens that followed

Hurricane Harvey dropped more than 46 inches of rain on Santa Fe over four days in 2017, one of the highest totals in Galveston County. Rescue crews fielded between 200 and 250 calls, The Daily News reported. Many families tore out lower cabinets and drywall and rebuilt their kitchens quickly, sometimes with whatever tops they could get at the time. If your post-Harvey kitchen has a countertop you never really liked, replacing it now is a straightforward job as long as the cabinets underneath are sound.

Room for outdoor kitchens

Santa Fe's lots often leave room for an outdoor cooking area, and a stone top is what turns a grill on a cart into a real outdoor kitchen. For a station in full sun, granite is the material we recommend most because it handles heat and UV well. A leathered or flamed finish hides water spots and gives better grip when the surface is wet. Under a covered patio, you have more options, including some quartzites. Indoor quartz is not designed for direct sun and can discolor.

Drainage matters on low ground

Santa Fe sits on a low coastal plain, roughly 19 to 27 feet above sea level, with Highland Bayou and Halls Bayou draining southeast toward West Bay. The area is prone to flash flooding and is laced with ditches, culverts and reservoirs. For an outdoor kitchen, that means setting the base on a slab that sheds water and choosing a stone that will not mind being soaked. Indoors, if you have ever had water in the house, ask us to check the base cabinets for swelling before new stone goes on.

Matching stone to how you cook

Families who bake a lot often like a cool quartz or granite surface for rolling dough. Big cooks who set hot pans down without thinking may lean toward granite, which tolerates heat better than quartz (though we always suggest a trivet). If you entertain, an oversized island with a single seamless slab is worth discussing; slab size limits how long a single piece can run.

Santa Fe Questions

Which stone is best for an outdoor kitchen in Santa Fe?

For a grill area in full sun, granite is usually the safest pick. It handles heat, UV and heavy rain well. A textured finish like leathered helps hide water spots. We do not recommend standard indoor quartz for uncovered outdoor use.

My kitchen was rebuilt after Harvey. Can I just change the tops?

In most cases, yes. If the cabinets were replaced after the storm and are solid and level, we can remove the existing tops and install new quartz or granite on the same cabinets.

How big can a one-piece island be?

It depends on the slab. Many quartz and granite slabs run around 120 to 130 inches long, with jumbo slabs a bit larger. If your island is longer, we plan the seam location with you before cutting.

Do you travel out to Santa Fe from League City?
